What is this thing called prebiotic?
Prebiotics are a special type of fibre that our body does not break down until it reaches the large intestine. Once there, our friendly gut bacteria break it down to form fuel for themselves and the surrounding cells. In addition, the fermented product helps reduce intestinal pH and inflammation, supports immune health and improves waste elimination.
How does it help me?
Consumption of prebiotics is associated with:
Where do I find it?
Garlic and onion, leeks and spring onion, beetroot and Jerusalem artichoke, asparagus, Savoy cabbage, cooked and cooled potatoes and sweet potatoes (particularly the purple skinned variety), chickpeas and lentils, bananas, berries and apples (especially with the skin), prunes, oats and barley, cashews, pistachios and Flaxseeds
Gassy warning!
If these foods are not commonly part of your diet, or you only occasionally include them, it is best to start off slow and gradually incorporate them into your daily diet. Sudden increase of these high fibre foods may cause bloating, excessive flatulence or gastric upset.
